This week we are learning about the present simple tense in English. This can be a tricky topic (especially for younger learners). I find the easiest way to teach this is using games and activities to ensure the students grasp the concept and have fun at the same time.

- PowerPoint – Intro to Verbs in The Present Simple
- PowerPoint – Review Game For Present Simple
- Miniature whiteboard + whiteboard pen and eraser (note: you can also use scratch paper!)
- Present simple cut and paste activity
- Sticky ball or soft toy (to throw)
All preparation is optional and can be adjusted according to your classroom!

- Print the present simple cut and paste activity (cut out verb word cut out OR let your students do the cutting!)
How to teach:
There are various things you can do with the resources I have created. Check out the brief lesson plan I’ve created that focuses on how to teach in a 45 minute period.
Introduction: 10 minutes
- Introduce the different rules using the PowerPoint – Intro to Verbs in The Present Simple. Challenge your students to think outside the box and give them a reward if they can come up with their own sentences using various pronouns (he/she/it OR we/they/you/I).
Lesson Proper: 25 minutes
- Activity 1: Use the present simple cut and paste activity to create various sentences. The students can choose any verb that fits in the blank as long as it follows the rules. Allow students to work in small groups or alone.
- Activity 2: Challenge the students by splitting them into small groups and giving each a whiteboard, pen and eraser. Play the PowerPoint – Review Game For Present Simple . Give each team 45 seconds to write the correct answer that fills in the blank. When the time is up check the answers. If the team is correct give them 1 point. The first team to reach 10 points is the winner. Note: If each team is receiving 1 point each round you can add bonus questions… for example: What if we change this sentence to say “He _______ the cake.” Allow the students to think for a few minutes (and discuss). Then, have them race to touch the board. The first team to touch the board can answer for a bonus point!
Conclusion: 10 minutes
- Conclude the lesson by assessing the students understanding. Write various verbs on the whiteboard in different bubbles . Allow students to throw a sticky ball or soft toy at the whiteboard. Whichever word they hit they must create a sentence using the verb you provide. For example… If the student hits the verb “runs”, the student must say something like “He runs fast.”
Use the present simple cut and paste activity to create sentences. Allow students to cut out verb word cutouts if time permits OR prepare before hand for shorter lessons. Let your students look at the PowerPoint – Intro to Verbs in The Present Simple if they are struggling.
Play the PowerPoint – Review Game for Present Simple in small groups. Have your students write the answer on a whiteboard or piece of paper.
